Cholera

What is cholera?

Cholera is an acute, diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. An estimated 3-5 million cases and over 100,000 deaths occur each year around the world.

 

It was discovered by John Snow.

John Snow was a British physician and a leader in the adoption of anesthesia and medical hygiene. He is considered tobe one of the fathers in epidemiology, because of his work in tracing the source of a cholera outbreak in Soho, England, in 1854.
